Rubber Peptizer

Rubber Peptizers

Before raw rubber can be compounded, it has to be masticated — broken down from a tough, tangled mass of molecular chains into something soft and workable enough to accept fillers and additives. This step consumes significant mixing time and energy on its own, and peptizers exist to speed it up by catalyzing the breakdown of those molecular chains during mastication.

Our peptizer in this category is DBD-40, a pre-dispersed derivative of 2,2'-dithiobisbenzanilide (DBD). Compared with traditional powder peptizers, DBD-40 is supplied as a free-flowing dark green to blue granule that can be weighed automatically, improving both processing consistency and the working environment on the mixing room floor.

How to Use DBD-40

Application method

Add during mastication of natural or synthetic rubber on an open mill or in an internal mixer. DBD-40 catalyzes the breakdown of molecular chains during plasticizing, shortening plasticizing time and reducing energy consumption.

Effective temperature range

Active above 70°C, with peak performance between 150–160°C. Confirm your mastication temperature falls within this range to get the full benefit.

Recommended dosage

0.1–0.5 phr, adjusted based on the degree of plasticization required and your specific rubber grade.

Packaging & storage

Available in 25 kg plastic woven bags, paper bags with plastic film liners, or kraft paper bags. Store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is DBD-40 different from traditional powder peptizers?

DBD-40 is supplied as a free-flowing granule rather than a fine powder, which allows automatic weighing and reduces dust exposure in the mixing room, while delivering the same active DBD chemistry.

2. Why does the active ingredient have a much higher melting point than the masterbatch?

The pure DBD compound melts at ≥136°C, but the finished masterbatch — which is 40% DBD blended with carrier and dispersing aids — has a lower stated melting point of ≥54°C, reflecting the behavior of the full granule rather than the isolated active ingredient.

3. What happens if mastication temperature is below 70°C?

DBD-40 is designed to be active above 70°C, with the best results at 150–160°C. Below this threshold, its ability to catalyze molecular chain breakdown drops off, so confirming your process temperature is a useful first step before troubleshooting mastication efficiency.

4. Is DBD-40 suitable for both natural and synthetic rubber?

Yes, DBD-40 is designed for use with both natural rubber and synthetic rubber during open mill or internal mixer mastication.
